MB for 5 minutes of a video's stereo sound

  • MP3 192 kbpsAbout 7.2 MB
  • WAV 44.1 kHzAbout 53 MB
  • WAV 48 kHzAbout 58 MB
Most phone and camera video carries 48 kHz sound, so its WAV is about 11.5 MB a minute.

Where to Use the WAV

WAV is the format editors and audio tools accept without question. Once the sound is out of the video, it opens in:

  • Audacity (free, Windows, Mac and Linux) opens and edits WAV.
  • GarageBand and Logic Pro on a Mac, and Adobe Audition, Pro Tools and FL Studio on Windows or Mac.
  • Video editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut on a computer.
  • Speech-to-text and caption tools, many of which list WAV as the preferred upload.
  • Every media player: Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player, VLC, and the Files app on iPhone.

Video to WAV: Frequently Asked Questions

Which video formats can I convert to WAV?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV, as long as your browser can play the file. AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP need a different engine and are not supported yet.
How big will the WAV be?
About 10 MB per minute of stereo sound. A 5 minute video makes a WAV of about 50 MB.
Is my video sent to a server?
No. Your browser reads the video and writes the WAV on your own device. Nothing is sent to MP4toMP3.io or anyone else, and the page keeps working with Wi-Fi off once it has loaded.
Is the WAV lossless?
The WAV keeps exactly the sound that was in the video, with no new loss. It cannot add detail the video's compressed sound track never had.
Can I convert a long video?
Yes. Videos up to about 45 minutes convert in one quick pass on a computer, 15 minutes on a phone. Longer videos use a slower mode that plays the sound through once.
What sample rate will the WAV have?
The same as the video's sound, so nothing is resampled. Most phone and camera videos use 48 kHz; some downloads and music videos use 44.1 kHz.
Which programs open WAV files?
Every media player and editor, including Audacity, GarageBand, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player and VLC.
Is the video to WAV converter free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no paid plan. The conversion runs on your own device, so there is no server cost to pass on.
Can I batch convert video files to WAV?
Not yet. Convert one file at a time; each one takes a few seconds. Batch conversion is planned.
How long does it take to convert a video to WAV?
Usually a few seconds. In a test, a 46.6 second, 21.95 MB MP4 became an MP3 in 2.0 seconds on a MacBook in Chrome. Longer files take longer, and a phone is slower than a computer. Nothing has to upload first, so there is no queue.
