What You Get When MP4 Becomes WAV

An MP4 video usually carries its sound as AAC, a compressed format. Converting to WAV decodes that sound track once and stores it as plain, uncompressed samples. The picture is left behind.

Converting to MP3 would compress the sound a second time. WAV skips that step, so the result keeps all the detail the video had.

MP4, or MPEG-4 Part 14, is a container from the Moving Picture Experts Group. It usually holds H.264 or H.265 video and AAC sound. WAV, the Waveform Audio File Format developed by Microsoft and IBM, holds only uncompressed audio, stored as plain PCM samples.

Why Convert MP4 to WAV

  • Clean Up the Sound

Noise removal and voice tools in Audacity, Adobe Audition or DaVinci Resolve work best on uncompressed audio.

  • Transcription and Captions

Many speech-to-text tools prefer WAV. Trim the video to the part you need to keep the file small.

  • Reuse Music and Voice-Overs

Take the sound from a clip into a new edit or song without adding another round of compression.

WAV Files Are Large, Trim What You Do Not Need

A 16-bit stereo WAV takes about 10 MB per minute, so a one-hour video makes a WAV of about 600 MB. If you only need part of it, turn on Trim before you convert.

Videos up to about 45 minutes convert in one quick pass on a computer, 15 minutes on a phone. Longer videos use a slower mode that plays the sound through once.

  • 5 minutesAbout 53 MB
  • 15 minutesAbout 159 MB
  • 30 minutesAbout 318 MB
  • 60 minutesAbout 635 MB
Video with 48 kHz sound makes a WAV about 9% larger. Trim keeps only the part you need.

MP4 to WAV: Frequently Asked Questions

Is MP4 to WAV lossless?
The step from MP4 to WAV adds no loss: the WAV keeps exactly what the video's sound track had. It cannot add detail that the compressed sound track never had.
Why is the WAV bigger than the MP4?
The video stores its sound compressed. WAV stores it uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute of stereo sound, even though the picture is gone.
Is my video sent to a server?
No. Your browser reads the video and writes the WAV on your own device. Nothing is sent to MP4toMP3.io or anyone else, and the page keeps working with Wi-Fi off once it has loaded.
Does it work with MOV, WebM and MKV too?
Yes. Any video your browser can play converts the same way, including iPhone MOV and screen recordings. MKV works when its sound is AAC, Opus, Vorbis, MP3 or FLAC.
What sample rate is the WAV?
The WAV is 16-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz, depending on your device. Most video sound is recorded at 48 kHz.
Does the WAV keep the video?
No. Only the sound track is saved. The picture is left out, and your MP4 file is not changed.
Can I convert MP4 to WAV on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone and choose the video. On a phone, videos up to about 15 minutes convert in one quick pass.
Is there a file size limit?
No upload limit, because the video is never uploaded. Up to about 45 minutes converts in one quick pass on a computer, 15 minutes on a phone; longer files use a slower mode that plays the sound through once.
Can I batch convert MP4 files to WAV?
Not yet. Convert one file at a time; each one takes a few seconds. Batch conversion is planned.
