WAV is an uncompressed audio format made by Microsoft and IBM in 1991. It stores every sample as recorded, which is why studios, voice recorders and audio editors use it.
CD-quality WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz, stereo) runs at 1,411 kbps, about 10.6 MB per minute. The same minute as a 192 kbps MP3 is about 1.4 MB.
| WAV (CD quality) | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | None | Lossy |
| Bitrate | 1,411 kbps | 128 to 320 kbps |
| Size per minute | About 10.6 MB | About 1 to 2.4 MB |
| Best for | Recording and editing | Listening, sharing, uploading |
A 5 minute WAV of about 53 MB becomes a 7 MB MP3 at 192 kbps, small enough for email and messaging apps.
Podcast hosts, school portals and forms take MP3 and upload it in a fraction of the time.
Keep the WAV master for editing and an MP3 copy for your phone and library.
For finished music, use 256 or 320 kbps; most listeners cannot tell it apart from the WAV. For voice recordings, lectures and interviews, 128 kbps is plenty.
Keep the original WAV if you may edit the audio again. Editing and re-saving an MP3 loses a little more detail each time.
