What a Video to Audio Converter Does

A video file is a container that holds a picture track and a sound track side by side. A video to audio converter reads the sound track, drops the picture, and saves the sound as an audio file such as MP3.

Because the picture is usually most of the file, the audio file is far smaller. A 10 minute 1080p video of about 300 MB becomes an MP3 of about 14 MB at 192 kbps.

Why Convert Video to Audio

Listen Without the Screen

Lectures, podcasts recorded on video, sermons and music videos are easier to play on a commute as audio, with the phone locked.

Save Space and Data

An audio file is often a twentieth of the video size, so it fits on a full phone and sends quickly on WhatsApp or email.

Feed Other Tools

Transcription services, audio editors and podcast hosts take audio files. Extracting the sound first makes those uploads smaller and faster.

MP3 or WebM Audio: Which to Pick

Pick MP3 when you want a file that plays on every phone, car stereo and app. It is the default, encoded at the bitrate you choose.

Pick WebM audio when you will keep using the file in a browser or editor that reads WebM, and want the sound kept as Opus. WebM audio is recorded while the video plays, so it takes as long as the clip.

Video to Audio: Frequently Asked Questions

Which video formats can I convert to audio?
MP4, MOV and WebM convert in every modern browser. MKV converts when its sound track is AAC, Opus, Vorbis, MP3 or FLAC. AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP need a different engine and are not supported yet.
Which audio formats can I convert video to?
MP3 at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, or WebM audio. WAV output is planned next.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser reads the video and writes the MP3 on your own device. Nothing is sent to MP4toMP3.io or anyone else, and the page keeps working with Wi-Fi off once it has loaded.
Does the audio lose quality?
MP3 removes some detail, but at 192 kbps or higher most people cannot hear the difference. The audio can never sound better than the sound track inside the video.
Can I convert a long video?
Yes. Videos up to about 45 minutes convert in one quick pass on a computer, 15 minutes on a phone. Longer videos use a slower mode that plays the sound through once.
