WebM is an open video format released by Google in 2010. It holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, and it is what Chrome produces when a website records your screen, camera or microphone.
That is why so many screen recorders, online voice recorders and meeting tools hand you a .webm file. Browsers play it, but many phones, car stereos and editors do not.
| WebM | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Google, 2010, open and royalty-free | Fraunhofer and MPEG, 1993 |
| Audio codec | Opus or Vorbis | MP3 |
| Common source | Browser screen, webcam and voice recorders | Music, podcasts, audio apps |
| Plays on | Browsers, VLC, newer Android | Every device and app |
iPhones, car stereos, WhatsApp and many audio editors do not open WebM. MP3 opens everywhere.
Save the voice from a recorded lesson, demo or call as a small MP3 to send or transcribe.
A downloaded voice clip that ends in .webm becomes a normal audio file you can play and edit.
Some online voice recorders save sound only, still with a .webm ending. Those convert the same way: drop the file, pick a bitrate, and download the MP3.
WebM audio is usually Opus, which sounds good at low bitrates. For speech, 128 kbps MP3 keeps it clear; there is little point going higher.
