MKV (Matroska) is an open container that can hold several video, audio and subtitle tracks in one file. OBS Studio offers it as a crash-safe recording format, and many films and episodes are shared as MKV.
The audio inside an MKV can be almost any codec. Browsers decode AAC, Opus, Vorbis, MP3 and FLAC, so MKV files with those convert here. Movie files with AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS sound usually do not.
| Audio codec in the MKV | Common in | Converts here |
|---|---|---|
| AAC | OBS recordings, phone and web video | Yes |
| Opus or Vorbis | Open-source tools, web video | Yes |
| MP3 or FLAC | Music videos, archives | Yes |
| AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS | Film and TV releases | Usually not |
Save the commentary from an OBS gameplay or tutorial recording as a small MP3.
Phones, car stereos and music apps rarely open MKV. MP3 plays on all of them.
An hour-long MKV can be several gigabytes; the same hour as a 128 kbps MP3 is about 58 MB.
When an MKV fails or comes out silent, the sound track is almost always AC-3, E-AC-3 or DTS. Browsers do not decode those codecs.
MKV files with more than one audio language convert the default track. Support for every codec and track choice needs a full media engine, which is planned.
