OGG is an open container from the Xiph.Org Foundation. Most .ogg files hold Vorbis audio; newer ones hold Opus. Both are free of patents and royalties.
You meet OGG files in game folders, Android ringtones and notification sounds, Wikipedia audio clips and open-source software.

Many iPhones, car stereos and music apps will not open OGG. MP3 opens everywhere.
Video and audio editors that reject OGG accept MP3 for sound effects and music beds.

Both kinds convert the same way. If your file came from a voice message app, it is probably Opus; the Opus to MP3 page explains bitrates for voice.
Chrome, Edge and Firefox read OGG on any computer or Android phone. Safari support depends on the version; if a file does not open on an iPhone, convert it on a computer.
