AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the audio codec behind most MP4 videos, iTunes songs and YouTube sound. A file ending in .aac holds the raw AAC stream without an MP4 wrapper.
Call recorders, voice recorder apps, radio and stream rippers and some screen recorders save .aac files. They are compact, but some players and upload forms do not accept them.

Many forms, portals and older apps list MP3 as the only audio format.
Basic MP3 players, some car stereos and some Windows apps do not play raw .aac files.

AAC sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, so match or slightly exceed it. A 128 kbps AAC sounds best as a 160 to 192 kbps MP3.
Going far above the original, such as 320 kbps from a 96 kbps AAC, makes the file bigger without making it sound better.
