What Is a FLAC File?

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compresses audio without throwing any of it away. Decoded, a FLAC file is bit-for-bit identical to the original recording.

FLAC files are usually about half to two thirds the size of the same WAV, around 5 to 7 MB per minute for CD-quality music. Hi-res FLAC is larger still.

Why Convert FLAC to MP3

Fit More Music

MP3 at 320 kbps takes roughly a third of the space, so far more of your library fits on a phone.

Play in the Car

Many car stereos and USB players read MP3 but not FLAC.

Keep the Master

Keep the FLAC as your archive and carry MP3 copies for everyday listening.

Does FLAC to MP3 Lose Quality?

Yes. FLAC keeps everything; MP3 removes detail that is hard to hear. At 320 kbps most people cannot tell them apart in blind tests, on most headphones.

Keep your FLAC files. If you need another format later, convert from the FLAC again rather than from the MP3.

FLAC to MP3: Frequently Asked Questions

What bitrate should I use for FLAC to MP3?
320 kbps keeps the most detail; 256 kbps is nearly as good and smaller. Lower bitrates throw away more of what makes FLAC worth having.
Can I convert hi-res FLAC (24-bit, 96 kHz)?
Yes. Browsers decode hi-res FLAC; the MP3 is written at a standard sample rate.
Is my FLAC file uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser reads the FLAC file and writes the MP3 on your own device. Nothing is sent to MP4toMP3.io or anyone else, and the page keeps working with Wi-Fi off once it has loaded.
Will the MP3 keep the album art and tags?
Not yet. The MP3 keeps the file name; artist, album and cover tags are not copied over.
Can I convert many FLAC files at once?
Not yet. Convert one file at a time; batch conversion is planned.
